The images are "ethnic portraits, stunning in their richness of detail. Mr. Gross's visual proficiency is evident with each photograph, but what is more striking is the intuitive sense of secrets that seem to lie just beneath the surface of weathered eyes, shy smiles, or leathered skin as translucent and thin as parchment. This intangible quality is hard to describe, and harder yet to capture, but many who view these images will agree that he has successfully done so.
